Digital or Analogue CCTV

Digital or Analogue CCTV

CCTV cameras and security systems have almost unlimited uses for most businesses and can help protect stock, products, cash and the staff and customers. They can also help in legal issues, and even in the day-to-day running of a business, allowing a manager to get a fly-on-the-wall perspective of how staff handle the day-to-day running of the company when they aren’t around.

When you hear of security systems, it’s normally CCTV that you think of. CCTV stands for ‘Closed Circuit Television’, which describes the fact that all the cameras in such as system are linked by physical wires (or wirelessly on a single server), rather than receiving a signal from outside as normal television does.

When selecting CCTV cameras however there are two main types you can pick from, and you can either opt for an analogue option, or a digital solution such as Hikvision DVR. While both have strengths and weaknesses, the latter is certainly the more ‘high tech’ and offers more features.

First of all, Hikvision DVR or a similar digital option, will allow you to do away with the wires implied in ‘closed circuit television’ and use a wirelessly internet connection to let your devises speak to each other remotely – which will give you far more option when placing your cameras as you won’t be impeded by wires and cables.

The files that will be recorded through something like Hikvision DVR will also be far more versatile than those recorded by an analogue device. Analogue devices you see work by flicking between different views from different cameras and playing these images in sequence on a television that will then record the footage via VCR. While these can be programmed, it does inevitably mean that there’s a chance the crucial moments will be missed if the system was recording the wrong view at that time.

With DVR solutions, the view from each camera will be recorded separately meaning you won’t miss anything. This is possible as the files don’t need to be stored on a VHS, meaning there are no storage issues. However, should you want to make copies you can then easily copy the files on to a CD, a DVD, a memory stick or a memory card. This is also made easier by the fact that you can alter the quality – both definition and frame rate – of the files, enabling you to store more before you have to delete old footage. Better yet, with digital security systems it is possible to programme the cameras to use motion sensors, meaning that you won’t have hours and hours of footage of an empty room to sift through. This can make finding the crucial moments easier, as well allowing more days’ worth of footage to be stored.

An added bonus of digital cameras is that these files can be e-mailed or viewed (or even controlled remotely). This means that you can monitor your business from elsewhere, or even from abroad. This can help you sleep easy at night and means you can watch your surveillance when your property is most vulnerable – while you’re not there.
